CATL and Octopus Energy Launch “SwapTopus” JV for European Truck Battery Swapping

Chinese battery giant CATL and UK energy firm Octopus Energy have formally launched their “SwapTopus” joint venture, targeting a European battery-swapping network for electric heavy trucks. The initiative was first announced on June 22, 2026, according to FuelCellsWorks.

Comparative Scale and Standardisation

The Chinese network is also being standardised: CnEVPost reports that CATL launched China’s first standardised light truck battery swap ecosystem on May 25, 2026, which includes standardised battery packs, swap stations, and a unified communication protocol, according to CnEVPost. This standardisation is expected to lower costs and accelerate adoption across different truck OEMs.

Battery Demand Projections

For Europe, the SwapTopus JV will initially deploy a smaller number of stations, but the long-term ambition is to build a network comparable to China’s, according to FuelCellsWorks. The JV will also explore partnerships with European truck manufacturers and logistics companies to ensure interoperability.

Thailand Pilot and Global Expansion

Separately, U Power has announced completion of production of 30 battery-swapping electric heavy trucks for a Thailand pilot, with shipment scheduled for late May 2026, as part of a 1,000-vehicle plan, according to PR Newswire. This pilot will test the viability of battery swapping in Southeast Asian tropical conditions.
