Toyota and Sinotruk sign hydrogen-technology agreement — with EU-compliant trucks planned

Sinotruk (CNHTC) has signed a strategic hydrogen-energy technology agreement with Toyota Motor Corporation, per industry reporting — pairing the world’s most experienced fuel-cell vehicle maker with China’s heavy-truck export leader. Plans include hydrogen heavy-duty trucks compliant with EU ECE R134 standards targeted for European and American premium markets.
The significance cuts three ways. For Sinotruk, Toyota’s fuel-cell stack is the fastest credible route to a hydrogen product line that can face European regulation — complementing its NEV push (Q1: 49,000 exports, +46.9%). For Toyota, it’s a return to heavy-truck fuel cells with the world’s highest-volume partner. For European hydrogen watchers (Daimler’s NextGenH2 with Dachser from late 2026, Volvo’s HPDI tests, IVECO’s S-eWay FCEV), it’s the first serious China-linked entrant announced for the hydrogen segment.
Our standing propulsion guidance is unchanged: battery-electric owns the duty cycles that fit this decade; hydrogen contests the residual long-haul niche later. But ECE R134-compliant Chinese-Toyota hydrogen trucks would change that segment’s competitive pricing exactly as battery trucks’ did — watch the filing.
