CharIN publishes IEC TS 63379 — megawatt charging gets its global interoperability rulebook

February 2026: the international standard defining MCS connectors and cable assemblies — pin design, safety requirements — is published. The last ‘will it be standard?’ question about megawatt charging is answered.

CharIN announced the publication of IEC TS 63379 in February 2026 — the international technical specification for megawatt-power conductive DC charging, defining connector and cable-assembly requirements including the standardised pin-and-contact design and specific safety requirements for MCS hardware.

Standards are unglamorous and decisive. Until now, fleets and CPOs could reasonably ask whether MCS would fragment into proprietary variants (the fate that befell swap standards, where CATL’s Qiji format faces exactly that objection in Europe). IEC TS 63379 answers it: megawatt charging is an open, internationally standardised interface — which is why Milence’s members argue for charging over swap on openness grounds, and why procurement teams can now specify ‘MCS per IEC TS 63379’ in tenders without vendor lock-in risk.

Practical consequence: with the interface standardised, the bottlenecks that remain are physical — grid capacity, site permits, build rate — not technical uncertainty. Expect every 2026–27 truck RFP and every serious CPO tender to reference the standard. Our MCS/AFIR explainer has been updated to cite it.
