Speaking at the Handelsblatt Annual Conference Commercial Vehicles in Munich, BYD Europe’s head of eTruck, Barış Akyalçım, framed the company’s European push as an ecosystem play: vehicles plus batteries plus charging infrastructure plus energy management — explicitly not ‘just delivering a vehicle’. BYD claims 120,000+ electric commercial vehicles operating globally and is now accelerating its European truck dealer and service network.

Two of Akyalçım’s admissions are more informative than the marketing. First, the target segments are the pragmatic ones: urban distribution, municipal, ports, depot logistics — the duty cycles our scenario guides say electrify first. Second, he named grid capacity as the bottleneck (‘very difficult to obtain the necessary grid power’) and pointed to BYD’s integrated charging-plus-storage as the answer — a vehicle maker selling around Europe’s grid constraint, which is exactly what depot-scale buyers keep reporting as their critical path.

BYD’s European hardware position: production at its existing Hungary bus plant (tariff and ‘foreign import’ mitigation), 100% in-house Blade Battery LFP cells (no CATL dependency — unique among Chinese entrants), and heavy-truck re-entry only from 2025.
