China’s December 2025: 45,300 electric heavy trucks, 53.9% penetration — the month the majority flipped

December 2025 was the first month in history where most heavy trucks sold in China were new-energy: 45,300 units, 53.89% of the market, +198% year-on-year. Front-loaded demand explains part of the spike — the direction does not.

Data released in late January by CV World confirms what the Chinese industry had sensed all autumn: December 2025 was the crossover month. China registered 45,300 new-energy heavy trucks against a total heavy-truck market of 84,000 — a 53.89% penetration rate, the first time electric (and other new-energy) formats took the majority of the world’s largest truck market. Sales surged 198% year-on-year and 62% versus November, when penetration stood at 36.45%.

Read the spike honestly. Part of December’s leap was calendar mechanics: purchase-incentive structures pulled 2026 demand forward into December, and the full-year figure — 231,100 units, +182% — is the more robust number than any single month. January 2026 was always likely to show a hangover. But the structural drivers identified in our China Briefing (purchase-price parity on LFP cost curves, swap infrastructure on industrial corridors, diesel-pricing policy) are unaffected by which month the orders landed in.

Why Europe should care about a Chinese sales month. Three reasons. Volume is price: every month at this scale pushes the global LFP truck-battery cost curve down, which lands in European quotes within 12–18 months. Volume is proof: fleets asking “does electric trucking work at scale?” now have a majority-penetration market as the answer. And volume is pressure: Chinese OEMs producing at this cadence need export markets, which is why SANY is delivering in Germany and XCMG is homologating for 2027 — the supply side of Europe’s transition is being built in Changsha and Xuzhou whether Europe is ready or not.
